about

Home Studios is a hybrid tutoring and course based Arts & Design program for middle and high school students conducted all online. Through the program students receive weekly individualized one-on-one tutoring, and also have weekly opportunities to engage with their peers who are completing the same challenges. Project Based Learning is at the core of all Home Studios programming, and this ethos allows students to gain real world skills that will prepare them for the 21st century marketplace, and set them apart in their high school and college applications. In every project students learn industry standard techniques and methods currently used by Artists and Designers, and bring their creativity, interests, and passions to develop projects that help them define their own style and build a portfolio.

Course Structure

Each course is based around a theme and a series of techniques whether that be filmmaking, graphic design, or creative writing. The courses run for 8 weeks and involve a weekly hour long one-on-one tutoring session, a weekly assignment (3-5 hours), and a group session where students gain and provide feedback to their peers. Each course culminates in the students completing a multi-week final project that is then presented to all of their peers and families.

  • 1 hour weekly tutoring session via google meet

  • 1 hour group critique via google meet

  • 1 weekly challenge / assignment (3-5 hours)

  • 8 week courses

  • 5-8 student cohorts per course

Individual Tutoring

A number of Individual Tutoring options are available that are more focused around specific skill building, or a students particular interest. These can be one-off or continuing sessions. Although they are more specific, together the student and I will build a project based plan to develop skills in the 21st century context. This is a good option for parents and students looking to develop or hone their high school or college applications in creative ways.

Digital Classroom

Sessions take place all through the Google Meetups platform which is the enterprise form of Google Hangouts. As 21st Century skills are a core part of the curriculum, the workflow for the course is modelled after a normal creative workflow involving the Google Suite and Trello, and all students are required to write professional emails throughout. Parents will be given full access to all materials online, and included in all communications throughout for transparency and to be able to easily track progress.

  • Emphasis on 21st Century Skills

  • Students use G-Suite for work and communication

  • Students track progress in Trello

For Educators

In addition to my online course and tutoring offering, I have experience building out digital infrastructure and curriculum for education programs. If you are an educator and / or administrator currently trying to figure out the transition to digital learning please feel free to reach out.

College Application: The Video Essay

In these sessions I will assist your student in developing a standout video essay for their college application. More and more schools are offering this as an option, and it is a great way for your student to make a great impression and give a clearer sense of who they are than through the traditional application process. In the sessions we will cover the necessary things college’s are looking for, and how to highlight those through film. We will also cover video editing, audio recording for video, lighting, and many more techniques to help tell your student’s story.

About Me

me bw.jpg

I am a designer, filmmaker, photographer and long time educator. I have worked for startups, non-profits, and education organizations, and currently run my own branding and design research consultancy called Myth Design. In addition, I am one of the Co-Founders of cofutures, an organization that creates programming and content featuring cutting edge artists and designers who are making an impact on the future of their field.

As an educator I have worked in many roles, but most recently in 2018-2019 I helped found an immersive project based learning program for high schoolers in Chicago that focused on building 21st century skills through applied learning in the field of social impact. In the program I worked as the embedded design educator focusing on building out the project management and design thinking capabilities of students and staff. I am a graduate of the Masters of Industrial Design program at Rhode Island School of Design and hold a B.A in Social Thought from Earlham College.
